About Deepfakes

A deepfake is synthetic media created using artificial intelligence. It can include manipulated videos, images, or audio that make it appear as if someone said or did something they never actually did. The technology uses deep learning algorithms, particularly generative adversarial networks (GANs), to create highly realistic fabrications.
Deepfakes are created using AI models that are trained on large datasets of images or videos of a person. The AI learns to mimic facial expressions, voice patterns, and movements. Common techniques include face-swapping (replacing one person's face with another), lip-syncing (making someone appear to say different words), and full body puppeteering.
Deepfakes pose significant risks including: spreading misinformation and fake news, identity theft and fraud, reputation damage, political manipulation, non-consensual intimate imagery, and corporate espionage. A 2024 case saw a company lose $25.6 million to a deepfake video call scam.
While some deepfakes have visible flaws like unnatural blinking, lighting inconsistencies, or blurry edges around faces, modern AI-generated content is becoming increasingly difficult to detect with the naked eye. This is why tools like VerifyReal use multiple detection layers including metadata analysis, machine learning, and frequency analysis.

Our Technology

VerifyReal uses a multi-layer detection system: (1) Metadata Analysis - examining EXIF data and digital fingerprints, (2) ML Models - AI trained on millions of real and fake images, (3) Error Level Analysis (ELA) - detecting compression inconsistencies, and (4) Frequency Analysis - identifying patterns invisible to the human eye.
VerifyReal achieves approximately 95% accuracy on industry benchmarks. However, no detection system is 100% accurate. We always provide a confidence score with our results and continuously update our models to keep pace with evolving AI generation techniques.
Most images are analyzed in under 5 seconds. Our system runs multiple detection layers simultaneously to provide fast results without compromising accuracy.
VerifyReal supports JPG, PNG, and WebP formats up to 10MB in size. For API users, we also accept base64-encoded images.
While VerifyReal is highly effective at detecting most AI-generated images and common manipulation techniques, the field is constantly evolving. Some cutting-edge AI models may produce images that are harder to detect. We continuously update our detection models to stay ahead of new generation techniques.
